Quicksilva

Started out writing games for the Sinclair zx80 and z81, of the 1k variety.

John Hollis and Nick Lambert's baby was a reasonably big company back in the day, with releases for the Spectrum, Oric and Commodore as well as the BBC. There's still loads of copies of Quicksilva games in circulation twenty years after their release, and in particular of Mined Out, their biggest hit and the best-known version of Minesweeper anywhere on the Beeb. Odd really, as it's a very ordinary interpretation. The fantastic Protector was written by Andy Green, also responsible for Acornsoft's curiously poor Missile Base, and was one of very few joystick-only arcade games available for the machine.

Please contact me if you have any additional information about the company or its games!

This is actually a really good idea, you drop barrels down chutes, and depending which way certain ramps are facing, the barrel takes a different route, you have to get 8 barrels into the separate chambers, so it is a metter of working out where to drop the barrels so that they end up in the holders. So, a nice original idea, the graphics aren't too hot, but then again, they dont' need to be!

Graphically speaking, this has got to one of the worst games I have ever seen! The game is really a text one, with characters programmed into the spare character sets. It is quite a simple game, sort of like Minesweeper on the PC. You have to guide the man through the minefield, without touching any of the mines (which you can't see) you are told if there is one near, and have to try and follow the instructions. It is quite a fun game to play really, but the graphics really stink!

You are in control of a disk shape, and have to protect the pods in the middle of the screen, which the thiefs try to steal, they come at you all at once, and you have to eat them as quickly as possible, whilst also avoiding the mines, and the monsters. You can play with 1 or 2 players, but it is joystick only as far as I can tell. It is original and fun, and the graphcis are not bad at all.

A shoot em-up with wizards! You are the wizard, and have to protect the five princesses by blasting the aliens with your magic wand. It is an ok game to play, but not very original, and the wand doesn't seem to fire properly sometimes! The graphics are big and bold, which is good, and the sounds is ok, but at times annoying. Not really worth playing, it is a very average game.
